This Valentine's Day, a Majority of Americans Would Choose Financial Security Over Love

"Financial transparency is beneficial ...in the relationship"

And they both lived happily ever after—with a diversified portfolio, retirement plan and the reality of debt-free financial security, of course.

According to a study conducted by Merrill Edge, an online banking and investing platform, matters of the wallet are actually trumping matters of the heart. The study found that more than half (56 percent) of Americans say that they prefer a partner who provides financial security over “head over heels” love (44 percent). The preference was true for both men and women.

The study found that Americans also prefer a career-focused significant other (63 percent) over one who is socially conscious; a frugal spouse more than a philanthropic one; and a saver rather than a spender (83 percent, compared to 17 percent).
