'Gender-Lens Investing’ Is Here to Stay

One of the fast-growing parts of sustainable investing is so-called gender-lens investing

One of the fast-growing parts of sustainable investing is so-called gender-lens investing, which integrates gender-based factors, either to improve returns or to promote more gender equality. There have been a number of investment product introductions around the world recently; expect more.

Much of the interest has been caused by #MeToo, but also by the Women’s March and an increased focus on gender inequality, which made International Women’s Day even more visible last week.

“This has gained more interest faster among clients than anything since the divest/investment movement around climate change,” says Patricia Farrar-Rivas, CEO of Veris Wealth Partners, which oversees $1 billion in funds of funds that are sustainably managed; about $100 million of that is specifically run according to a gender-lens mandate.

The vast majority of consumer decisions are made by women, notes Farrar-Rivas—including clothing, health-care, and food choices. Diversity helps investors “identify quality management teams,” she says.
